The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace on April 6th, comes into full play in the current context. Using sport to protect our planet and reinforce our bonds with each other. Message of HSH Prince Albert II, Peace and Sport Patron over #IDSDP2020 and #WhiteCard Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Friends. We’re enduring a major health crisis which is breaking into our hectic daily lives. That can sometimes distance us from the real objectives of our existence. Here with crisis is also an opportunity. we must hope that the current global emergency will help humankind realise the importance of global unity. During this confinement period, we must envision the future and choose to travel down a path of worldwide solidarity, dialogue and cooperation. Universal and neutral nature of sport is sustaining the collective effort to fight the epidemic. Athletes, sport institutions and civil society organisations are currently bringing hope and courage to communities worried about their future through their charisma and actions. The Message behind the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace celebrated on April 6th comes into full play in a current context. Using sport to protect our planet and reinforce our bonds with each other is a huge responsibility we owe to our children and future generations. I welcome Peace and Sports mobilisation for this day including the #WhiteCard campaign which is naturally anchored in the values promoted by the principality. In regular times sports provide a platform for people that come together physically. Today sport through the #WhiteCard sends a message of connectivity, hope and solidarity on social networks. We must continue promoting the positive values of Sport for Peace for our benefit today and for a fairer world in the future. Thank you! HSH Prince Albert II The promotion of peace does not stop in times of health crises. On the contrary, there can’t be peace without health and people’s well-being and sport has a role. International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
In 2013 the UN General Assembly declared April 6th as the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (#IDSDP), representing a significant step in recognizing the transformative power of sport and its great potential in advancing positive social change.
Many organizations and individuals celebrate on this day the role that sport plays in society with its unparalleled popularity and foundation of positive values, whether by encouraging healthier lifestyles or making sports more accessible in areas made vulnerable by conflict, poverty and inequality.
April 6th is a celebration of the work being carried out every day to transmit the educational values of sport – a propitious day to continue sending a message of global solidarity, unity, respect of the rules, team spirit and reinforce fraternity and cooperation.
The #WhiteCard campaign
As a reference to the yellow and the red card in the sporting world, organization Peace and Sport created a #WhiteCard in 2014 to symbolize the positive power of sport for peace and social inclusion.
The core message of the 2020 #WhiteCard campaign is “Behind each #WhiteCard, there is a story”, drawing attention to stories of individuals and beneficiaries who have been positively impacted by sport worldwide.
Posting a story with a picture with your pet and holding a #WhiteCard, each of us can send a message of unity and global solidarity.
