Floridas detection dog Jake aka the sniffer dog got high while trying to find drugs being smuggled by passengers into the “Holy Ship!” dance music cruise. The dog accidentally inhaled some MDMA (called ecstasy in the streets) from a bag of powder in one of the raver’s pockets.
“Jake started having some problems with balance and had some type of seizure incident of some sort, was showing effects of having inhaled some substance,” said the Brevard County Sheriff Tod Goodyear.
Before rushing to the veterinary the dog was given Narcan, a medication used to block the effects of opioids like heroin in the event of overdoses. But as MDMA is a stimulant and not an opioid, it was unclear if it helped Jake. Tests also confirmed the dog ingested a form of ecstasy. Jake the sniffer dog is now in stable condition.
33 years old Leslie Bennet from Montana was arrested for possession of a controlled substance without prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia and equipment. He hid the pills in his boxers which tested positive for MDMA and amphetamine. Over a dozen people were arrested for offences including drug possession.
A notice from the festival said: “Every person and each piece of luggage will be inspected by dogs trained to detect explosives and contraband. “Anyone found to be violating the law and/or in possession of illegal substances and prohibited items will be arrested and banned from future events.”
Holy Ship! organisers added: “The event has been an incredibly popular and meaningful music experience for thousands over the years, and it is unfortunate that the actions of a select few reflect poorly on such a beloved festival.”
